BTEC Hospitality and Catering

How is the course externally assessed?

The course has 2 units of work.

 

Unit 1 - a written exam where the students will study:

  • The Hospitality and Catering industry
  • 40% Written examination 1hr 20 mins

Unit 1: enables learners to gain and develop comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the hospitality and catering industry including provision, health and safety, and food safety.

1.3 Health and safety in hospitality and catering

1.4 Food safety in hospitality and catering

 

Unit 2 controlled assessment where students research and plan a meal for a chosen customer.

  • Hospitality and Catering in action
  • 60% Controlled assessment: approximately 12 hours

Unit 2: enables learners to develop and apply knowledge and understanding of the importance of nutrition and how to plan nutritious menus. They will learn the skills needed to prepare, cook and present dishes. They will also learn how to review their work effectively .

 

Vocational qualifications are graded with pass, merit or distinction either at Level 1 or 2. The numbers in brackets below are the GCSE equivalents e.g. L2P is a Level 2 Pass and is the equivalent to a GCSE grade 4.

 

Grades available:

L2D* (8.5), L2D (7), L2M (5.5), L2P (4), L1P (1.75)

 

How is the course internally assessed?

Students are assessed every half term on a written assessment on theory covered that term and a practical assessment focusing on key skills.
