Technical Award Construction and the Built Environment

Introduction

Delivered over two years, students are taught about the building and construction Industry, exploring, types of building projects, project planning, the roles of the trades and professions. They are given a broad overview of the built environment and develop vocational skills in Joinery, Plumbing and Electrical Installation. They will make a number of practical projects developing real trade skills and developing their problem solving abilities. An ideal course for those students looking to secure apprenticeships in the construction industry or simply to learn some very useful home maintenance skills.

How is the course assessed?

 

Unit 1 40% Written Exam

Theoretical underpinning knowledge culminating with a 90 min externally marked (on line) examination of a broad range of construction topics including health and safety, building types, roles of key workers and professionals

 

Unit 3 60% Practical with written elements

Students must demonstrate project management skills to plan for a building task. Students also generate evidence of competences by completing practical controlled assessments in Joinery, Plumbing and Electrical Installation.

 

Graded at Level 1 Pass, Merit and Distinction or Level 2 Pass, Merit and Distinction. The Level 2 is equivalent to a full GCSE.

Homework and learning outside of the classroom

Students will be set written tasks on a weekly basis. Study Support is available for skill building and revision.
