Technical Award Construction and the Built Environment

Introduction

Delivered over two years, students are taught about the building and construction industry, exploring, types of building projects, project planning, and the roles of the trades and professions. They are given a broad overview of the built environment and develop vocational skills in joinery, plumbing and electrical installation. They will do a number of practical projects which will enable them to develop real trade skills and their problem solving abilities. This is an ideal course for those students looking to secure apprenticeships in the construction industry or simply to learn some very useful home maintenance skills.

How is the course examined?

Unit 1: Written Exam (40%)

Theoretical underpinning knowledge culminating with a 90 min externally marked (on line) examination of a broad range of construction topics including health and safety, building types, roles of key workers and professionals

Unit 3: Practical project with written elements (60%)

The practical project requires students to demonstrate project management skills to plan for a building task. Students also need to generate evidence of competences by completing practical controlled assessments in joinery, plumbing and electrical installation.
