The Library stocks a comprehensive range of non-fiction books that supports the curriculum and provides the opportunity for wider reading. Promoting a culture of reading in school is one of the core aims of the library. The Library promotes reading for pleasure and has an excellent range of fiction which is well-used by students. As well as classics and modern fiction, this includes Manga titles, graphic novels and a ‘quick read’ section. The fiction range is constantly being updated to reflect recently published titles and students are encouraged to make recommendations for new library stock.
USING THE LIBRARY
All students are automatically enrolled in the Library from year 7 to the end of year 13.
The Library is open to students before and after school most days. Students can also visit the Library during break and lunch times on a rota basis; students can find this rota displayed on the Library door and on the corridors. In year 7 and year 8, students will have one timetabled English lesson per fortnight in the Library.
BORROWING & RETURNING BOOKS
The AHS Library catalogue (Reading Cloud) is available online, so students can search for books they would like to borrow. Students can access the catalogue by clicking on the Reading Cloud logo further down this page.
Students are free to borrow up to 3 books at a time; the loan period is initially 2 weeks, but this can be extended as required.
Students can return library books by placing them in the green ‘Library Returns’ box, which is located just inside the Library entrance. If a student misplaces or damages a book whilst they are borrowing it, they should inform Ms Warnock, the librarian, as soon as possible.

Year 7 and year 8 students will complete a STAR test at the beginning of each term and a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) will be calculated to help students choose books which are appropriate for their reading ability. The programme then offers quizzes on each book, so that teachers can monitor reading progress.

Library Programmes and Activities
The librarian, Ms Warnock, works closely with the English department. The literacy coordinator and librarian organise different reading support clubs for students in KS3. The librarian also hosts after school activities on a timetabled basis; students can find more information in the weekly student bulletin.
The librarian works with colleagues in the area to schedule regular extra-curricular opportunities; for example, visiting authors, poetry slam and local book awards. We also host the Scholastic Book Fair during the Autumn term.
Year 7 students participate in the annual Book Buzz scheme in which they get to select a free book from a range of genres.
As a result of high-quality teaching and the broader experiences to which they are exposed, students are exceptionally well prepared for the next stage in their education.
