This course offers students the opportunity to develop a good understanding of a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature and literary non-fiction. Studying English Language also allows students to develop their ability to read and write accurately and fluently – an essential life skill. Students will further benefit from opportunities to develop their verbal presentation skills and gain confidence in articulating their ideas precisely and coherently.
In Year 10 and 11, students follow a two-year linear course that is 100% exam based. Our half-termly assessments examine students on their current topic. They will sit two English Language papers at the end of Year 11. Students follow the AQA GCSE specification.

AQA Spoken Language Endorsement
Students are required to deliver a speech about a topic of their choice to their teacher and peers and answer questions on the topic. Students are assessed on their speaking skills and are awarded Distinction, Merit, Pass or Not Classified.
This is worth 0% of the GCSE English Language or Literature grade, but is awarded as a separate qualification.

Homework
Students should expect to receive two pieces of homework per week, one of which may be a reading or online task. All students are expected to regularly access Google Classroom, where their teacher will post notices, resources and instructions.

Y11 English Drop-Ins take place in EN6 every Thursday 2:50pm to 3:50 pm. All year 11 students are welcome and encouraged to attend.
