A Level History

How is the course externally examined?

At A-level, there are three assessment components. Component 1 assesses students’ understanding of breadth and of historical interpretations. Component 2 assesses understanding of depth and of the value of primary sources. Component 3 is a Historical Investigation (non-exam assessment).

 

Component 1: The Tudors 1486-1603 (40% - 2 hour and 30 minute exam)

Component 2: Democracy and Nazism 1918-45 (40% - 2 hour and 30 minute exam)

Component 3: Historical investigation (20% - coursework - 4500 word essay)

 

How is the course internally assessed?

Year 12:

  • Students will sit an assessment each half term for both the Tudors and Germany on the content they have been covering.
  • Their December mock will be a separate Tudors and Germany paper
  • Their June mock will be a full 2 hour 30 minute paper to replicate the experience of an A Level exam, covering both Tudors and Germany content from across the year.

Year 13:

  • Students will sit an assessment each half term for both the Tudors and Germany on the content they have been covering.
  • Their December mock will be a full 2 hour 30 minute paper to replicate the experience of an A Level exam, covering both Tudors and Germany content from across the year.
  • In half term 3a the focus for assessment will be their final coursework hand in.
