Learning Resource Centre

Location & Opening Times

Allerton High Library and Learning Resource Centre is located on the ground floor of the school, opposite the main reception desk.  The library is open throughout the school day, including break and lunchtime. It remains open until 4pm every day for students to study, do homework and read.

All students are automatically members of the library and can use the facilities. They are entitled to borrow books and also have the use of 32 laptop computers with internet access and printing facilities.

Book Stock

The library stocks a comprehensive range of non-fiction books that supports the curriculum and provides the opportunity for wider reading.

Promoting a culture of reading in school is one of the core aims of the library. The library promotes reading for pleasure and has an excellent range of fiction which is well-used by students. As well as classics and modern fiction, this includes Manga titles, graphic novels and a ‘quick read’ section. The fiction range is constantly being updated to reflect recently published titles and students are encouraged to make recommendations. Click here for our recommended reading lists.

Allerton High is an Accelerated Reader school and the library has a large selection of books to support this programme.

e-Book Platform

The Allerton High e-book platform has a number of GCSE and A-Level e-textbooks which are available for students to access 24/7. The platform also includes English set texts and some fiction titles

Library Programmes and Activities

The librarian, Mrs Walker, works closely with the  English department.  The literacy coordinator and librarian organise a reading support club for students in Y7. Under this scheme Post-16 students are offered the opportunity to train as reading mentors and to support younger students with their reading.

The library benefits from having strong links with the School Library Service, Leeds public libraries and Ilkley Literature Festival. This enables us to regularly have authors in school and also to take students to book events in the city.

Authors who visited Allerton High in 2017/2018 include award-winning writer Alex Wheatle and comic book artist Jim Medway.

The librarian runs book groups for the Leeds Book Awards and the Young People’s Comic Award. Students who participate in these are given the opportunity to attend the award ceremonies and meet authors.
